Can Hyperbaric Oxygen Help a Bipolar Patient?

Proven to treat a number of symptoms and promote natural healing within the body, hyperbaric oxygen treatment is still shrouded with mystery. Many individuals who have suffered acute brain damage have responded well to the use of a hyperbaric chamber, and the increase flow of oxygen seemingly has a healing effect on brain tissue. But can this type of treatment help with existing conditions such as bipolar disorder?

Although many studies have been done concerning the use of hyperbaric oxygen treatment, there aren’t many conclusive studies that link the treatment to having any effects on bipolar disorder. Many professionals believe that there is a chance that the disorder can be treated by use of this technique as it has been proven effective in curing other afflictions of the brain. For example, a few studies have concluded that the extended use of hyperbaric oxygen can help null the symptoms of the brain disorder known as Parkinson’s disease.

Mainly used to promote cell regeneration after a trauma to the brain, hyperbaric treatment works by supplying the entire body with more oxygen and promoting a healthier and more stable overall chemistry within the body. Further studies are still being conducted to find out the possible effects of the treatment on other neurological disorders, but it’s still unknown whether or not it has an effect on conditions where the brain has not suffered any cell damage or trauma.

Bipolar disorder effects the body in a chemical capacity less than a cellular one, so many doctors are skeptical as to whether or not it can actually cure the disorder. However, hyperbaric oxygent treatment has been proven to yield positive mental benefits and promote a more relaxing state of mind. Because of this evidence, some experts believe that the oxygen treatment might not necessarily treat the disorder directly, but it may be able to calm the patient and reduce the likelihood of bipolar episodes.

The world of hyperbaric medicine is still in its infancy and much has yet to be learned about its benefits. When it comes to treating bipolar disorder, it is still yet undetermined as to whether or not hyperbaric treatment has any effect. Those who suffer from the disorder have reported that there are fringe benefits to the treatment such as a more relaxed overall state of mind, but more research must be conducted in order to determine whether or not hyperbaric medicine is an actual treatment for the disorder.
